2017 2018 Goose season

August 23, 2017

Will the 2017-2018 goose season be a good season for Third Coast?

My answer is yes. The US Fish and Wildlife annual Waterfowl Status Report says that snow geese had a good to better than average hatch of juvenile birds. The main ingredient for a good goose season is here.

Juvenile birds are much more susceptible to decoys.

Waterfowl need four ingredients. Food, water, grit and solitude. The Arkansas Delta is the largest  rice farming  area in North America. Rice farming provides ample waste grain for food, but also rice is farmed on flat ground so holding water is very easy.

Grit is in ample supply in the sandy loam soil. What really sets the Arkansas Delta apart from other goose hunting areas is the lack of hunting pressure. The delta is world renown for its World Class duck hunting, but goose hunting is not as popular.

For the people who came by to visit at the Texas Trophy Hunter's Extravaganza in Fort Worth the weekend of Aug. 11-13, I want to say thank you. We had a great time and look forward to hunting with you.

#1

Use BBB or BB shot. 10 gauge is best, but 12 gauge is fine.

#2

Wear something that will keep your backside dry on cold wet ground. Goose hunting is an extreme sport, and you are in the elements - be prepared.

#3

Wear dark or white clothing. Do not wear hunter orange. Unlike deer hunting, we do not need to see each other since we are shooting in the same direction.
